How to Calculate Forex Profit & Loss
Forex P&L is measured in pips — the smallest standardised price move for a currency pair — and then converted into a monetary value based on your lot size and account currency.
Step 1 — Calculate pips moved
Buy trade: Pips = (Close Price − Open Price) / Pip Size
Sell trade: Pips = (Open Price − Close Price) / Pip Size
Step 2 — Convert to monetary value
P&L = Pips × Pip Value × Lot Size
The pip value depends on the quote currency of the pair. For USD-denominated accounts trading a USD-quoted pair (e.g. EUR/USD), 1 pip = $10 per standard lot. For cross pairs, the pip value must be converted using the current exchange rate.
