Mean Reversion
Range Reversal Setup
Fade extremes of a well-defined range, trading rejections at boundaries.
How It Works
Range reversal (mean reversion) trading works when price oscillates between clear support and resistance levels. Instead of trading the breakout, you trade the bounce — selling at resistance and buying at support.
This setup works best in low-volatility environments like the Asian session, or when a pair is range-bound ahead of a major event. The key is identifying a range that has been respected at least 2-3 times.
The risk is that ranges eventually break. Always use stops beyond the range boundary and be ready to exit quickly if a genuine breakout occurs.
Ideal Conditions
- Price has bounced between support and resistance at least 2-3 times
- No major news events imminent
- Low-volatility session (Asian, pre-market)
- Range is at least 30-40 pips wide (enough room for profit)
- RSI or Stochastic showing overbought/oversold at edges
Entry Rules
- 1Wait for price to reach the edge of the range
- 2Look for a rejection candle (pin bar, engulfing) at the boundary
- 3Enter on the next candle with stop beyond the range edge
- 4Target the opposite side of the range or the midpoint
Invalidation — When to Stay Out
- Price closes strongly beyond the range on high volume
- Range narrows significantly (triangle forming — breakout coming)
- Major news event is about to release
- Price makes a new high/low beyond the range without reversing
Risk Management Tips
- Never risk more than the range width (obvious stop level)
- Take profit at midpoint of range or opposite edge
- Reduce size in ranges narrower than 30 pips
- Exit all range trades before high-impact news
Examples
EUR/USD Asian Range
EUR/USD trades in a 40-pip range during Asian session. Price touches resistance and forms a doji. Short entry with stop 15 pips above resistance, target support.
AUD/USD Pre-NFP Range
AUD/USD consolidates ahead of NFP in a 45-pip range. Multiple touches of both levels. Fade the top with tight stop, exit before the news release.
